It may surprise you to know that pork is the most consumed meat in the world, followed by poultry and beef. Surprised?
The value of the global pork trade is worth billions of dollars each year, and Africa enjoys less than 5% of this activity. China, the fifth most populous country in the world, is the largest producer and largest importer of pork products in the world!

Compared to other livestock such as sheep, goats and cattle, pigs are sensitive animals that require a high level of management. However, when farmed properly, they can earn a better income due to their high stocking rate (10 piglets per litter) and better feed-to-meat conversion ratio than other livestock.
Pig farmers have two options: intensive or free range. In the past, pigs were kept in high-density, closed housing systems. In free range farming, they were housed in small pens and grazed on forage crops such as wheat, barley, and grass. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages, but new pig farmers should also consider other factors before settling on one.
Before you start a pig production business, you need to decide how many pigs you want to keep, where you will keep them, and your target market. The number of pigs you keep will depend on the amount of land and capital you have, and the size of your target market. You should also conduct a feasibility study and write a business plan before you start any business. Don’t make the mistake of starting a hairdressing business or any other business just because someone else is doing it and he/she says it is profitable.
There are many factors to consider when raising pigs in intensive units. The rise in the semi-arid environment has always posed challenges when raising pigs. The supply of expensive feed such as corn, which is a major component of the feedlot diet, has caused a significant decline in pig production, especially in well-managed facilities.
Key factors to consider when raising pigs: - Biosecurity: Effective disease control measures should be put in place to reduce the spread of diseases from outside into the combing unit. The initiative is based on:
* Foot boxes for employees when they enter the combing section/section.
* Strict control of mobile phones, which are often overlooked when they move with people everywhere.
* Specific clothing for employees in the hair care unit to ensure that home clothes will not come into contact with pigs in the event of a disease outbreak.
- Adequate nutrition: Adequate balanced nutrition should be fed at all times, especially the trace elements magnesium, sodium, copper, calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, etc.
- Cool place: Pigs do not have sweat glands, so they are very dependent on the support of the farmer, especially in the summer months. The use of water sprinklers and fans is appropriate to control the body temperature of the pigs. Since very high temperatures can cause pigs to succumb to stress and eventually die.
- Manure disposal: Good manure disposal on farms should be considered because frequent contact with manure can cause disease-causing microorganisms.

- Avoid mixing different age groups: To reduce bullying among sows and piglets. When nursing, a piglet can face serious threats.
